Early Literacy

Early language and literacy development begins in the first three years of life. You can encourage your child’s language skills by:

  • Talking to them: Engage with your child! Make eye contact. Even if your child is just babbling in return, they are hearing your words and building a vocabulary.

  • Choose books based on their passions: Whatever your child shows interest in (trains, princesses, dinosaurs) use that interest to build excitement over reading!

  • Make connections between books and activities you’ve done: This helps children make connections between the words and the world.

  • Continuing to read even if they wiggle or move: Keep reading! You can also choose books with actions so you can read and move together!
